      SC18, Dallas, TX., November 9, 2018 – Lucd, a provider of an end to end Enterprise AI Platform will announce a breakthrough implementation of Reservoir Computing capability for next generation Artificial Intelligence at SC18.  
      Lucd has implemented a key approach to Reservoir Computing, called Echo State Neural Networks, using its patent pending Distributed Optimistic System. Reservoir computing (RC) is an alternative to Deep Learning Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), which are critical to breakthroughs in applications such as natural language processing  RC has the added benefit of greatly reduced computation required in the hidden layers of the network. Lucd’s distributed implementation has been tested on tens of thousands of processors to demonstrate the scalability of RNNs containing millions of neurons.
      As an alternative to Deep Learning, Reservoir Computing is transforming artificial intelligence (AI) because it takes less time to train highly accurate models. Today, practitioners are hampered by the long training times of RNNs, and the need to refresh training on a regular basis. Organizations with tens or hundreds of existing models require large-scale compute resources just to maintain the models they have. Lucd’s distributed approach solves this problem by reducing training times to minutes, while also enabling models of nearly unbounded width and depth. Neural nets that are millions of inputs wide and thousands of layers deep can now be trained in minutes, rather than months, and provide magnitudes of greater accuracy.
      “Training hidden layers is just too slow. Today’s systems were developed with parallel processing as an afterthought. In our experience, attempting to parallelize existing libraries almost never works well. We believe parallelization must be considered at the outset of the development of any new library. By starting with our scalable distributed optimistic system, we rapidly developed a large-scale echo state model that, out of the box was able to scale to thousands of processors. Our approach to neural network modeling requires a fraction of the time of classic training algorithms.” said Justin LaPre, Ph.D., Director of Distributed Computing at Lucd.
      The anticipated impact of this approach will be the further democratization of machine learning by reducing requirements for large amounts of highly specialized computing resources; the ability to train and retrain models of nearly any size within minutes; and to perform online training of models in production.

      PARALLEL RESERVOIR COMPUTING
      Reservoir computing (RC) is anticipated as next-generation artificial intelligence (AI).1 Modern Deep Learning training models and data are often very large and may require distributed computation to complete in a timely manner. RC is fast and simple learning compared to other recurrent neural networks.2 Parallelization allows the RC approach to handle chaotic systems of almost any size, as long as proportionate computer resources are dedicated to the task.3

      The market for deep learning is expected to exceed $18B by 2024 1. However, EE Times reports that the top two challenges for Deep Learning are first that “once the data sets are in hand, using them to train deep-learning networks can require days on big clusters of CPUs and GPUs”. Second: “one of the reasons deep learning works so well is the large number of interconnected neurons, or free parameters, that allow for capturing subtle nuances and variations in data. However, this also means that it is harder to identify hyperparameters, parameters whose values need to be fixed before training. The process is more art than science” 2.       Professor Carothers is an NSF CAREER Award winner as well as three times Best Paper award winner at the ACM-SIGSIM PADS Conference. Since joining Rensselaer, he has developed a world-class research portfolio which includes funding from the NSF, the U.S. Department of Energy, Army Research Laboratory, Air Force Research Laboratory, as well as several companies, including IBM, General Electric, and AT&T. Additionally, Professor Carothers serves as the Director for the Rensselaer Center for Computational Innovations (CCI). CCI is a partnership between Rensselaer and IBM. It’s flagship supercomputer is a 1 petaFLOP IBM Blue Gene/Q system with 80 terabytes of memory, 81,920 processing cores and over 2 petabytes of disk storage.
      Dr Carothers is also a faculty member in the Computer Science Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He received his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. from Georgia Institute of Technology. His research interests are focused on massively parallel computing which involve the creation of high-fidelity models of extreme-scale networks and computer systems. These models have executed using nearly 2,000,000 processing cores on the largest leadership class supercomputers in the world.
